Samsung Gear S3 Review

by kavitamevadaJune 30, 2017

The Samsung Gear S3 is a watch that’s gone big in a bid to match the success of the Apple Watch 2 – and we mean that accurately. This is a huge timepiece that offers all the features you’d expect from a smartwatch, including GPS, a heart rate monitor, water resistance, NFC, activity tracking, an altimeter and in some cases even LTE.

It pairs them with a great screen, a long-lasting battery and – similar to Apple – a high price, all wrapped up in either a sporty ‘Frontier’ finish or a smarter ‘Classic’ look.

Samsung gear s3  price, and the fact that the Samsung Gear S3 runs Tizen rather than Android Wear, could hold it back, especially since tempting new Android Wear 2.0-toting rivals like the LG Watch Sport and Huawei Watch 2 have now launched.

These feature-packed watches can even match the high-resolution, circular OLED screen of the Samsung Gear S3, and not all of them are as chunky on the wrist.

One of the key selling points is the fact the Samsung Gear S3 is compatible with the latest Samsung phones, but also with most other Android phones running version 4.4 of the OS or later, as long as they have at least 1.5GB of RAM.

Samsung’s also added features like built-in GPS for sports tracking and sending out SOS alerts, a speaker to make calls, Samsung Pay to, well, pay for stuff from your wrist, and a bigger battery.

Samsung s3 Gear Price

  • Out now in both Classic and Frontier flavors
  • Costs $349/£349 (around AU$475)

The Samsung Gear S3 started life at $349/£349 (around AU$475), which is expensive for a smart timepiece.

It’s now dropped to £249 in the UK on Amazon, and $213 in the US – we’re seeing it go for AU$599 though, which feels a mite expensive out there.

And it now thoroughly undercuts the Apple Watch 2, which starts at £369/$369/AU$529, and that’s for the smaller model. To get a version of the Apple Watch 2 that’s as big as the Gear S3 you’ll need to spend even more.

The Samsung Gear S3 Frontier is more of a manly device. Its huge 46mm body doesn’t really conform with women’s watch designs. That said, I do know women who like wearing such watches.

In a way, the Samsung Gear S3 looks to me like a Casio G Shock, and that’s not a bad comparison to be a part of. Unlike the Gear S2, the Gear S3 looks less like a toy and more like a real and rugged watch. The Classic feels more plasticky than the Frontier, but still decidedly more rugged than the S2.

The two buttons on the right side are also ridged and clicky, which feels good and conforms with the rest of the design.

You’ll find the optical heart rate sensor on the back, and a leather strap out of the box. A standard pin mechanism keeps the strap in place, meaning you can go to any watch maker to get another 22mm strap that fits.

However, Samsung’s Gear smartwatch series is an exception. With the Samsung Gear S2, the Korean company showed that it is a brand to watch out for when it comes to smartwatches. Its next iteration the Gear S3, comes with even more features and refinements. It is available in three variants: Samsung Gear S3 classic (Wi-Fi + cellular), Samsung Gear S3 classic (Wi-Fi only), and Samsung Gear S3 frontier (Wi-FI only). The one we received for review is the Gear S3 classic. Let us find out if it is good enough to justify the Rs 28,500 price tag.

What we like most about the Samsung Gear S3 is that it actually looks like a watch. It is not some weird-looking phone shrinked to fit your wrist. It features a 22mm leather band and a 316L stainless steel case. The quality of the steel case stands testament to Samsung’s industrial design prowess — it is a solid piece with incredible attention to detail.

The Samsung Gear S3 classic runs Samsung’s own Tizen Wearable Platform 2.3.2. Unlike other brands, Samsung has thoughtfully designed the user interface around the circular screen. For snappy menu navigation, the watch uses rotary dial on the bezel. There are also two physical buttons to control the gadget. Of course, you can go with the the tried-and-tested touchscreen input.

The Samsung Gear S3 Classic comes with a feature-packed S Health software suite. Based on the feedback from the Samsung Gear S2 users, Samsung has embedded the GPS chip in the latest Gear smartwatch. Users can now independently and accurately track runs and rides. The watch can also keep track of your heart-beat rate. Samsung’s virtual assistant can even read out your vitals during your workouts.
